Blogging Stuff Is So Quaint

I find it hard to believe sometimes, but I've lived in NYC over four years.  I moved here in April, 2004, but I actually came and visited in February of that year, just to get a feel for the lay of the land, check out the neighborhoods and stuff like that.

I vividly remember sitting in the Bagel Store on Bedford Ave, Williamsburg, picking up a copy of the Village Voice and thumbing through this article, written by someone named Whitney Pastorek (that name stuck with me for some reason, making it very easy to Google the article) about this strange new world of blogging. It was 2004, so it hadn't yet become gauche to actually write an article about blogging  in a print publication (oh wait!). Anyway, this passage in particular really stuck with me:

1. No one shows up for anything anymore.

There was an innocent time, about a year ago, when I was concerned that the Evite was going to be the death of polite society. But we now live in a world where it is unnecessary for people to attend any social functions whatsoever, so long as they are a blogger. For example: Let us say that I occasionally perform at literary events. I invite my friends to these events, hoping for affirmation and free drinks. How heartbreaking, then, when no one arrives! Phone calls are made: I am sad that you did not come to my event! The bloggers reply, invariably: But I linked to you on my blog! That is just the same as if I showed up in person!

It is not. It is very different.

Folks: My how things have changed. If Whitney Pastorek were in the same situation today, she'd be lucky to get a link from their blog! If she said "I am sad that you did not link to my event", her friends would've replied invariably: But I Twittered it! Or if she were extremely lucky here friends might reply: but I Tumblr'd it!

She's right: It's just not the same. And soon event that will seem quaint. In a year it'll be "Why didn't you Twitter my event?" And the response will be "Yes, but I hit 'I like this' on FriendFeed" for the listing.

And on and on and on it goes.
