Ok, promise this will be the last chess post for awhile...
Just looking at the other stuff written by Gene Milener, the Microsoftie who's commented here on matters related to chess. I see he has a book on what can be learned about regular chess by playing Chess 960, a variation of chess (first proposed by Bobby Fischer) whereby the positioning of the pieces is different each time you play the game. The idea is that by introducing some variation into the starting positions, games won't fall into such predictable patterns.
Stepping outside of chess is a good way to learn about regular chess. I've always thought that I learned more about English grammar from studying French than I ever did from studying English. Before learning how to conjugate the subjunctive tense in French, I don't think I even realized that we had a subjunctive in English.
I think there is a growing under-current of support for a compromise between (a)traditional chess with its static start position, and (b) FRC-chess960.
For every new World Chess Championship cycle, one new start position from FRC could be pre-announced to be in effect for the whole cycle (1-3 years).
This would allow the grandmasters to become highly creative in their opening plans again, with ideas available in abundance. With modern Fritz available, opening "theory" for the new start position would grow exponentially faster than it did for the traditional start position. That would be awesome to watch! Imagine the debates about new opening strategies along the way.
The new start position should be pre-announced far enough in advance that chess book publishers could have new opening books on the shelves in time for the new position to take effect.
It is not necessary for the whole chess world to agree on this. It only takes a couple of major Tournament Organizers to cooperate together.
