Jack Welch is starting to remind me of Alan Greenspan. Both men seemed to have made second careers out of defending the reputation from their previous one. "Neutron" Jack got some attention today over some choice words directed at current GE CEO Jeff Immelt, following GE's earnings miss earlier this week.
In addition to saying that Immelt had a "credibility issue", he threatened to "get a gun out and shoot" Immelt if he missed earnings again.
It's not hard to figure out what's going through Welch's mind. You see, in Welch's school of business management, you don't miss -- ever. Instead, you manufacture the number you need, if your underlying results look like they might come in below Wall St. expectations. Weak business results in the last month of the quarter? No matter, just play around with the accounting in financial services and make it happen. It's well known that Immelt isn't as fond of this game as Welch, and many of his early days at GE were about cleaning up some of this mess.
So yeah, maybe Immelt could do a better job of communicating with investors. But for investors, there's actually a meta-upside to this miss: GE's results are actually believable again.
The only thing you ever need to know about Jack Welch is at http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=869811
'And this was brought home to me when I was at a boot camp for CEOs where the audience was being lectured on how to be a CEO by Jack Welch, who had just retired. And, when asked who should chair the compensation committee on the board, Welch said, "Put someone in charge who is nearing the end of their career, so they're not jealous of you as a younger CEO, is immensely rich, much richer than you, and enjoys seeing other people get rich." And someone raised their hand and said, "I had a distinguished academic as my compensation chair." And everyone else in the room just shook their heads and sort of held their heads in their hands, and Welch said, "Never, ever make a distinguished academic your compensation committee chair because you'll be a poor man by the end of it."'
