We're seeing the term a lot: unwinding. Everytime there's a major gyration, it's described as an unwinding. FT Alphaville talks a little bit about unwinding today. Could it become just a straight up euphemism for recession? Perhaps George Bush will, at some point, tell his fellow Americans "I know the great unwinding has been tough, but the American economy is sound."
At that point, it's only a matter of time before it enters the popular lexicon.
- Breaking up with your girlfriend: "Yeah, we had a painful unwinding, but we're friends now."
- canceling appointments: "Yeah, I totally want to hang out, but I have some plans for tonight that I have to see if I can unwind."
- Changing your mind at a restaurant: "Is it too late to unwind that order, or has the chef already started preparing it?"
That's just three, but I suspect the possibilities are endless.
By the way Dawkins defined the meme as a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation and replication, but later definitions would vary
