There are a lot of companies out there offering to scan blogs and other community/social sites to measure stuff like "buzz", although to be honest, I've always been a little skeptical about these things. Mainly because "buzz" always seemed like such a fluid, airy thing that the idea of coming up with something useful out of it seems a little unlikely. But maybe.
But I could see how something like this could have value to the movie industry. Last night, I was reading another chapter of this book, which pointed out how early box office numbers (i.e. the first weekend or week) don't do a good job of predicting subsequent weekends, because the key thing is the information cascade that follows. The opening weekend can be huge, but if nobody who saw it told their friends about it, then the second weekend could be a total dud. The opposite, of course, holds true as well.
All of this matters to film distributors, because they have to make decisions, like how many screens to show a film on and how much advertising to keep showing, stuff like that. But unless they really can measure the flow of information among filmgoers, they're like the proverbial blind man in the shower. So if you could measure information and turn it into real actionable information quickly, there might be some value with something like this.
Even if the individual develops the same symptoms or health conditions that their parents or other family members had...chances are, if it is a degenerative condition...
