I'm sitting here at the flagship Whole Foods on the corner of 6th & Lamar in downtown Austin. It really is a temple of food, complete with a holy river of chocolate. The great thing about this place is that it's connected to the corporate HQ. You have to figure that most of the execs upstairs get their lunch from the big "cafeteria" down below, so it gives a new meaning to the old saw about eating your own dogfood. Also, a friend of mine claims to have once seen John Mackey collecting shopping carts on his lunch break.
Up here on the cafe level, there's a big time line of the history of the company. Did you know that in 1997, the company bought the Bread of Life chain based in Florida? I do now, only because I'm sitting right under that part. Skip ahead a few years to 2000, and it's a bunch of internet stuff. Wholefoodsmarket.com was launched that year, as well as WholePeople.com, which later merged with Gaiam.com. Unfortunately, the timeline ends in 2005, so no "Rahodeb" mentions on the list. (Hopefully, the free WiFi here doesn't scan for that word and try to block it). Hmm, I wonder if any of those posting were made right here, at the Whole Foods cafeteria.
