Where Does Mall Christmas Music Come from?.
Sean Horton of PlayNetwork is one of the professionals who make mall-music happen. His holiday specialty: contemporary Christmas music (basically anything from Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas” to the present). His mission: to match a store with Christmas music that properly reflects its image. If there’s a store that wants to have a punk-rock Christmas special, Horton’s the one who has to put together the soundtrack.
One of Horton’s clients is clothing chain Banana Republic. “Their image is sexy and hip,” Horton tells the Business Technology Blog. “The problem is the holidays aren’t sexy and hip.” Horton scoured his database of more than a million songs to find the few that fit what the clothing store needed: instrumental versions of holiday classics remixed with modern rhythms. One example of this sub-sub genre is a version of “Winter Wonderland” by the Cocteau Twins.
I've been wondering lately whether certain stores might do better to avoid Christmas music this time of year. Perhaps you could corner the music on Christmas-music haters by being the one store with no music, and perhaps no decorations. Or maybe not even "haters", but just people who need a respite.
Me, I never get sick of it. But that's probably a Jewish thing.
