IBM's Viral Service Oriented Architecture Video

Big Blue Goes For Viral Marketing

Coming soon to a theater near you- IBM's (NYSE:IBM) Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Is video supposed to be viral? A strange IBM spoof movie trailer which advertises a new movie called "Launch" and which seems to be about a returning executive who tried to implement SOA at a distressed company full of mystery. Is it just us, or does anyone else wish that IBM actually made the full movie. It has "cult film" written all over it and looks far more interesting than most Hollywood fare. They could do an online movie release whereby the SOA is used to conquer some pretty tough obstacles. Perhaps stubborn long term employees, supported by a mysterious Union, could try and sabotage the process. Oh well, maybe its just us. Nevertheless, good to see IBM trying new marketing techniques- we're giving it publicity at least.

It gets even better. IBM also has a website set up just for the "movie" They also provide the following plot summary:

The MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE of AFTer inc Founder and CEO Frank Masters leaves the keys to the kingdom in the hands of one Michael Kendell --a man returning home to the company that started his career. Times change and TROUBLE is the new status quo, as Mike must now survive financial and technical disaster if he's to save this once-great enterprise. But with the help of a brilliant IT Architect and a shadowy "Deep Throat" guide -- Mike will have to UNLOCK THE SECRETS of his business -- ESCAPE DANGER -- and SAVE HIS COMPANY . . . before it's too late.

IBM Posts SOA Primers to YouTube

IBM has also posted three videos on Google's (NSDQ:GOOG) YouTube which explain what SOA in plain english. Truly looks like IBM is innovating on the marketing front. The cost involved in this ads must be tiny. What's the "key take-away" for busy executives- even "respectable" companies can take advantage of the latest online technology and trends. We can more than imagine how senior people would scoff at a lower-rung emloyeee suggesting such methods. Not to get too personal... but, here, look, IBM is doing it.

IBM's YouTube videos: Number 1, Number 2, and Number 3. They are pretty good primers for anyone who wants to know what SOA is within 5 minutes. Knowledge, fast. We love it.

IBM's DeveloperWorks Blogs

While we're blowing the IBM horn, here's a link to an extensive list of IBM developer blogs. For those interested, they perhaps give a feel for the culture within the company. Ok, fine 75% of these blogs will probably wither and die, but just a few good ones can go a long way.

I've been in dire need of a small mobile pc that I could easily take to class, but I also don't have a lot of play money so I needed something cheap. I really didn't want one of those mediocre $500-800 entry level laptops. They're generally flimsy and poorly built. A netbook seemed like the perfect solution. When I heard Lenovo was making one I decided to check it out. (I've been a fan of IBM/Lenovo thinkpads since I got my Thinkpad 365 ~12 years ago) I was also considering one of the Dell machines, the HP Mininote, an EEE 1000H PC, and the Acer Aspire One. Lenovo managed to undercut the prices of most of the other computers while toting a 10.2" LED screen w/1024x600 resolution, and a 160gb hdd. Build quality was another strong point. Its keyboard was the best feeling of the group as well. The Lenovo was one of the few netbooks that didn't look or feel like a complete toy.
