We just got news of this from a friend. The coup is unsurprisingly headed by Prem Tinsulanonda, and it is said the new PM will soon be declared as Dr. Sumeth Tantivechakul, who was secretary general of the NESDB (National Economic & Social Development Board) 10 years ago before going on to work on many royal project for Thailand's King. He has been a frequent opponent of former prime minister Thaksin. But at least he's has an economics background.
We note that pictures of the Royal family are being played on all TV stations while soothing (yes soothing) patriotic music plays in the background. Once in awhile a spokesman comes on TV and tells us that the military and police forces have Bangkok and its surrounding area under control.
We personally believe the chance for violence is slim, but it is said that there are two factions in the military. One pro-Thaksin and one against. I think we can guess which faction is showing is muscle at this moment.
*11:55pm We have also heard that Thaksin's family has left the country 30 minutes ago
*12:02am Friends have told me that BBC and CNN cable has been cut as well.
