Chery Sounds Like Chevy in Chinese

Refering to one of yesterday's posts here at The Stalwart, its funny how now some of the Chinese "rip-off" companies are hitting the global stage. Now come on, Wumart? (HKSE:8277.HK) While spelled differently than Wal Mart (NYSE:WMT) in English, we have a feeling in Chinese it sounds almost exactly the same. Readers, feel free to correct us.

Of course then there's also Wumart's slogan: "Every Day Low Price" vs. Wal Mart's "Always Low Prices"

Second on our hit list- Up and coming Chery Automobile. Not only do the cars look like Chevies, but also we have a hunch... that Chery sounds just like Chevy in Chinese. We haven't yet learned enough Chinese, but believe that there isn't a "v" sound in the language. And from the looks of the pictures below we see that there is truly no shame over at Chery. some of their cars look exactly the same as Chevies. GM (NYSE:GM) is suing the Chinese Chery Automotive for manufacturing its QQ model which looks remarkably similar to GM's own Spark model. But lets be frank, the man on the street would just say that the QQ is a complete rip-off. But beyond the usual shock and disdain at how rampant IP abuse is in China, is there a lesson to be learned here? Autoblog reports that the Chery QQ is actually quite competitive in terms of quality, and not just with GM...

 

Sub-$4,000 Chery cars might just, excuse the bad joke, wevolutionize the auto industry. Just the fact that a car can be so easily copied, with a level of quality which competes with the world's biggest brands, this should set of alarm bells at the automakers. The Chery QQ is using many of the same parts as GM's Spark since these are becoming more standardized, and available due to the fact that their manufacture is increasingly outsourced to third-parties.

But maybe its time we wipe the smirk of our face. This is because just recently there has been talk that Chrysler (NYSE:DCX) actually needs Chery's help (link from DealBreaker.com) in supplying fuel efficient cars to the US consumer. Now thats a turn of events. And hey, if Chery can truly bring US$4000 cars to the US, then Chery or Chevy or whatever, we'll cheer the saved cash.

DaimlerChrysler AG is looking at selling cars made by China's Chery Automobile Co. Ltd. in the United States through its Chrysler group, a German magazine reported Monday. That could help the company meet demand for more fuel-efficient cars from American consumers.

Universal consensus among the Chinese is that the Chery is a P.o.S.

People buy it because it is all they can afford. It's not perceived to be of the same caliber as U.S. Japanes or European brands. History shows this eventually changes (aka made in Japan, made in Taiwan - no negative image there anymore).

Haha, thanks for the comment. Yes I agree, the perception will change. I think that if Chrysler uses cars manufactured by Chery it could be a sign that the company's quality is on the way to being on par. And yes, I have stories from my father about jokes in the 50's and early 60's regarding "cheap japanese crap". Things can change quite rapidly. I actually think it already has. Made in China is the standard now.

If you think the Chery looks like a Chevy, maybe you should get new glasses. No resemblence whatsoever. I have been to China several times and have ridden in the Chery Eastar, and QQ. Amazing cars.
