We came across an article we wish to highlight from the WSJ. (though we realize this isn't the most "off the beaten path source") I guess we too frequently hear about only a small demographic of Japanese companies, and while TDK is still reasonably well known, its interesting to hear it described as a top innovator and even more interesting to see that Nagano is the more innovative city than Tokyo.
What's most interesting about Japan's economic surge is that it is being led not by the well-known global giants like Tokyo-based Sony Corp., but by less familiar companies such as TDK Corp., which in the past decade has transformed itself from the maker of cassette tapes into the leading maker of hard-disk-drive heads, which read and write data on the disks used in personal computers and other electronics. TDK is based in Tokyo, but most of its innovation can be seen in out-of-the-way places such as Nagano Prefecture.
TDK and some other companies are developing a new global business template, taking advantage of both global acquisitions and cheap production in neighboring China to reinvent themselves. And at the same time, they are trying to change their corporate ethos to become more merit-based, less-hierarchical organizations.
"There is a manufacturing renaissance, but it isn't being led by the biggest companies and it isn't led in Tokyo," Mr. Kanno says.
Read on if you like. (requires subscription to the WSJ)
That is a great article and it is a great rebuttal to all those who act as though China will soon be taking over the world.
