Economics of Blogging, Pretty Much The Same as Elsewhere
Almost hate to bring this up, since it's hard to get excited about something like the economics of blogging, but we can quickly summarize the conclusion from this cover story in New York Magazine on the subject: It's just like everywhere else. Gaining popularity and profitability is really hard and rare, and lots of bloggers (most) toil in obscurity. Much like every other form of media before it, it's not easy to rise above the din and get read by many people. Blogs--surprise!--provide no magic bullet that allow everyone to voice their opinions on a level playing field, and not everyone can make money banging their fingers onto a keyboard.
