As you know, we've been skeptical of some of the more radical arguments about the future of media, though it's clear that things are changing. Just came across this company, Tunecore which for a small fee, will get your independently produced music sold on iTunes and Rhapsody. I'd been wondering whether this was possible, cause it's really a great delivery channel to have access too.
This has personal relevance to me, since, when I'm not doing all this stock and writing stuff, I like to dabble in music and songwriting as well. In fact, I just so happened to contribute some writing to this album--Dark Side of the Cop--which I can highly recommend that you check out. It's something of a 'concept album', though generally it's pretty 'pop'-ish and listenable. All of the songs can be streamed from the website, and the CD is available for purchase. It was produced, and mostly written, by my good friend Marco Panella, who resides in San Francisco, and made almost entirely using a Mac (all the instrumentation and editing). Unfortunately, we just got rejected by South-By-Southwest, but the guerrilla/viral/buzz/Word of Mouth marketing campaign is making its way through the internet as we speak. Anyone out there have any contacts at Pitchfork media, or any other places that do high-profile reviews? Spin? Thanks in advance.
I have been stating for a while that Steve Jobs is going to try to outmaneuver the big labels by becoming one of them, and now I hear he is the biggest shareholder of Disney. That's the kind of brand name and marketing power required to make a major new label.
I also think ideas such as this will be integrated into such a new label. The old business model, in which labels made the CD-sale profits, and bands lived off the tour income, will probably be thrown right out the window, and cause a lot of upheaval.
