Continuing on a theme we've discussed before, I recently found lecture notes from economist Arthur De Vany on similarities between the film industry and the pharmaceutical industry. De Vany notes the similarities in terms of revenue structures, both of which are based on non-Gaussian (non-bell curve; several losers a few gigantic winners) distribution. High-upfront costs followed by low marginal costs applies to both industries as well.
One thing I take away from reading stuff like this is that in both industries slumps just happen due to chance. Though analysts feel the need to explain why both industries are having problems (FDA, Canada, Economy, The Internet, The Long Tail, DVDs, Filesharing, Generics, etc.), one should remember that analysts are paid to explain things, not to say "My industry is just in a slump, but there's no true underlying cause, save Lady Fortuna"; though that would be very refreshing.
I highly recommend the blog of this economist, Art De Vany, who I think is one of the more interesting thinkers I've come across in some time.
