The Future of Healthcare? Hopefully.

IndyStar.com has an interesting article about a new kind of clinic.  A cheap, convenient in-and-out, no appointment necessary place where Nurse practitioners can administer shots, and treat minor problems:

It's all inside a tiny clinic crammed into the corner of the CVS pharmacy at 96th Street and Allisonville Road, one of seven clinics set to open Monday at local CVS stores.

The clinics, owned and operated by Minneapolis-based MinuteClinic, have no doctors on site but are staffed by nurse practitioners trained to diagnose and treat common ailments, from bronchitis to pink eye, and to provide basic services, such as vaccinations.

The private company, led by a former chief executive of fast-food chain Arby's, is on the leading edge of an emerging shift in U.S. health care that could push many routine medical tasks away from doctors' offices and emergency rooms to low-cost clinics open evenings and weekends.

The idea is to give patients more convenience and lower costs for common medical procedures. Some doctors, however, worry that the clinics emphasize convenience over care.

With healthcare costs oustripping inflation, and more joining the ranks of the uninsured (somehow, we bet those two things are related...), anything that reduces the cost of health care is exciting.  Removing the doctor, as gatekeeper to simple treatments and diagnoses, is a good step.  Of course some are complaining:

Some family physicians, however, are wary of a trend they fear could keep people from regularly seeing a doctor.

The clinics are popping up as people increasingly are paying more of their own health care, through reduced insurance coverage by many employers or higher co-pays. Those who run the clinics say it is also an option for those with little or no health insurance.

Of course the Doctors are against this, soon they won't be able to charge $150 to listen to a cough, and hit a knee with a mallet.  But the idea that this will keep people away from getting taken care of turns logic on it's head.  It's the prohibitive cost of seeing a doctor that discourages someone with a cough from getting it checked out.  Being able to pay a nurse $25 to tell you if it's serious or not will be a worthwhile expense.

If regulators keep away, which they really ought to given our nations fiscal situation, these clinics could garner a meaningful share of the healthcare industry, and reduce overall spending.  The healthcare system is a mess, and new ideas in delivery are sorely needed.  Even AOL founder Steve Case is getting involved, and wants a piece of the Minute Clinic action.  Hopefully others will follow suit.
