Amidst all the questions surrounding the newspaper business these days, everyone wants to know about the future and viability of these companies online divisions. Here's PaidContent.org on Gannet's latest earnings report:
Gannett's Q2 Online Earnings: Zero?: Well, not really, but somehow Gannett always pretends its online arm doesn't even exist: in its Q2 earnings announced today, not a single data point on its online properties (except lame stats like traffic).
According to its mid-year review presentation in June, the company is on track for more than $200 million in online advertising revenues this year. I think that's material enough to break it down by quarter, and at least give it a mention.
Here's the earnings report in question. And when they do mention their web properties here's what they say:
At the end of the quarter, Gannett had more than 110 domestic publishing Web sites, including USATODAY.com, one of the most popular newspaper sites on the Web. The company also had Web sites in all of its 19 television markets. In June, Gannett's consolidated domestic Internet audience share totaled 20 million unique visitors reaching approximately 13 percent of the Internet audience according to Nielsen//NetRatings. Newsquest is also an Internet leader in the United Kingdom where its network Web sites attracted more than 40 million monthly page impressions from approximately 2.9 million unique users in June.
I guess we should assume it's just not that big of a deal.
