GM FastLane Blog: Building the World’s Biggest Car Market.
Bob Lutz has returned from the Shanghai Auto Show convinced that GM is poised to reap the benefits of an expanding car-market. Of course, like his defense of the company's position in general, he gives no real explanation as to how GM will compete with the chinese manufacturers which will, almost certainly, have an advantage on price. Instead he says that GM has an exciting new car to sell there: The Chevy Aveo. This is just like two weeks ago when, after a terrible earnings report from GM, Mr. Lutz said he saw good things in the Buick Lacrosse. It's great that he loves GM products so much, but he's gonna need to address some of the company's structural flaws if he hopes to right this ship.
It is great to see that you are hanging your high hopes on a country that needs a small car, but what about our country? Who is going to be able to buy your Trucks and SUVs in the USofA if all your work is going out of this country and going to cheaper labor companies? Are we going to be able to buy your 30 to 50 thousand dollar big vehicles when you send all our jobs overseas. We as americans would like to see designs that appeal to us as americans. Have you ever noticed how many old cruising car shows there are in this country? Have you noticed how many people rebuild and restore the old classics? Why can't you take a chance on cars and trucks like Chysler dared to do with their truck design, Mustang, and Thunderbird. What do you think would happen if you came out with an old classic redesign such as the 57 Chevy or 68 Camaro or even the 62 Impala. I am sure that a lot of sells would be generated if you look and listen to what people really want. Dare to be different take a chance. You even said that all the time you spent on designing an aerodynamic vehicle was almost void when Honda cameout with a box like SUV. People walk into car dealerships and look first what they might look like in a vehicle. They look for conveniences and looks. Then they look at price. I feel that most people will pay extra if they like the looks and feel of a vehicle. And beyond that is the after service they recieve.
Thanks for letting me sound off.
